The GW Pre-Law Student Association's (PLSA) Executive Board recently announced the Spring 2018 Keynote Speaker, former solicitor general Donald B. Verrilli, Jr. As solicitor general, Mr. Verrilli argued on behalf of the federal government in countless landmark cases before the Supreme Court between 2011-2016, most notably National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius (2012), Shelby County v. Holder (2013) and Obergefell v. Hodges (2015).
A graduate of Yale and Columbia Law School, Mr. Verrilli's career has been packed with excitement, ranging from clerking for Justice Brennan in the 1980s to arguing before the High Court in MGM Studios, Inc. v. Grokster, Ltd., Capitol v. Thomas and Viacom International Inc. v. YouTube, Inc. as a telecommunications specialist in private practice. Before serving as solicitor general in the Obama administration, Mr. Verrilli served as the associate deputy attorney general and in the Office of White House Counsel. Mr. Verrilli was confirmed by the Senate to the position of solicitor general after President Obama appointed his predecessor, now-Justice Elena Kagan, to the Supreme Court. After resigning from the Office of the Solicitor General in July of 2016, Mr. Verrilli joined the law firm of Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, where he is a partner and founder of the firm’s Washington, DC office. His private practice focuses on representing and counseling clients on multi-dimensional problems, where litigation, regulation and public policy intersect to shape markets and industries in our evolving economy.
Leading up to Mr. Verrilli's visit to GW, the staff of the Justice Journal will be publishing articles analyzing his experience, practice of law and most notable cases. Stay tuned for upcoming articles and mark your calendars for this special event.
The event will be hosted on April 16th at 7:30 p.m. in the Marvin Amphitheater. To RSVP and for more information, go to go.gwu.edu/DonVerrilliPLSA.
